Where We Left Off Middle of Somewhere Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Roan Parrish Spencer Goss Books

Leo Ware may be young, but he knows what he wants. And what he wants is Will Highland. Snarky, sophisticated, fiercely opinionated Will Highland, who burst into Leo's unremarkable life like a supernova...and then was gone just as quickly.
For the past miserable year, Leo hasn't been able to stop thinking about the powerful connection he and Will shared. So, when Leo moves to New York for college, he sweeps back into Will's life, hopeful that they can pick up where they left off. What begins as a unique friendship soon burns with chemistry they can't deny...though Will certainly tries.
But Leo longs for more than friendship and hot sex. A romantic to his core, Leo wants passion, love, commitment - everything Will isn't interested in giving. Will thinks romance is a cheesy fairy tale and love is overrated. He likes his space and he's happy with things just the way they are, thank you very much. Or is he? Because as he and Leo get more and more tangled up in each other's lives, Will begins to act like maybe love is something he could feel after all.

I so wanted to love this book. I loved Daniel's story. Similarly, I was ridiculously and happily surprised that Roan Parrish could write a story about Colin that humanized him enough to keep me engaged and rooting for him. I thought his story was beautifully written and heart wrenching. From the glimpses of Leo in the first two books, I had him pegged as impish, adorable, and charmingly awkward--I certainly liked him well enough that I preordered his book. Now, having read it, I'm left a little off kilter. Apparently, I'd forgotten the painful insecurity and emotional drama that lives in the head of new adults because the overwhelming impression of Leo after his story is that he's just too young. Inchoate. Unripe. I definitely still like Leo, but I think I liked him better from afar. I'll like him better still with another 5 years under his belt.
I don't rate this installment as high as its predecessors, not bc the writing fell short (it didn't--it's actually very well written and thematically conceived) but rather bc I had a very hard time getting into it. I even skipped pages here and there. I'm thinking that for whatever reason, the common NA themes just don't do it for me, no matter how elegant the prose.
So, I guess the real barrier was that this was a story about a 19 year old, experiencing the newness of attending college away from home for the first time. Exploring his sexuality for the first time. Learning limits and setting boundaries for the first time. Sounds ok, but the 'reality' is that having been a college student not unlike Leo 20 years ago, I couldn't muster the desire or interest to go back to that headspace. I found the young characters melodramatic and over the top. I read the book knowing that this was where Leo's story would start and so I was kind of prepared for it.
Despite the issues I had staying engaged, I think some aspects were really well done. Surprisingly, the element that most people seem to take issue with, namely, Will's reluctance to commit and be monogamous, didn't bother me. I think Will's (and Leo's) flaws in this regard added authenticity and necessary conflict. Safe to say, I prefer my protags flawed and fully grown so maybe I would've enjoyed it more from Will's POV.
I very much like Roan Parrish's writing style. I've got her two previous books on kindle and audible. I'll definitely look forward to reading more books from her but this one is a 3 out of 5 for me.

Where We Left Off Middle of Somewhere Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Roan Parrish Spencer Goss Books Reviews
As with all Roan's work, the writing style and quality is impeccable!
Her stories have a way of drawing you into the drama which unfolds around you, and you can't let go until the end.
However, I felt this tale was far more complicated than it needs to be.
The character of Will was never one that was easy to like...so much so, that even as he mellows and "comes around" towards the end, and begins to reveal why he is such a cruel, unfeeling sod, the reader has, by this time developed such resentment toward him that garnering any sympathy or compassion for him at all is almost impossible.
Will's obsession with his own physical beauty, I felt, was blown totally out of proportion. (I can't see that any real person can be so traumatized by their good looks that it becomes a handicap bordering on mental disorder!)
Leo, on the other hand, was leaps and bounds ahead of the much older Will in maturity, and you can't help but love him, and sympathize with him for his devotion and determination, in spite of getting his little heart shattered time and again!
But, having said all that, I must add, that all this angst and drama is worth enduring for the sake of the stunningly beautiful conclusion to this story.
I agree with (several) other reviewers, that this story might have been a more satisfying read, if we could have had it from Will's POV. The mystery surrounding this character's nastiness is what causes most of the frustration for the reader.
Still a worthwhile read as part of this masterful trilogy!
Standalone story.
Heat level about 3.
I have been waiting for this story for a long time. I never preorder books, because I read so many. But I preordered this. I think like others have said Leo comes across as a little desperate. Will comes across as heartless and callous. Granted there has to be conflict. I feel like sometimes you can make a character behave so badly that even though they are supposed to be the one you are rooting for you just don't feel sympathy for them.. I felt like the writer did that with Collin. previously and now Will. I still this Roan is an excellent writer. Just did not get the warm and fuzzies from this book like I did the first in the series. This book was a solid read, but the first book was a stellar read .
